Tarot and Numerology:
The Major Arcana Decoded

June 2026 · Ancient Traditions

The 22 Major Arcana cards are not randomly numbered. Each number encodes its card's meaning precisely — The Fool at 0 (unlimited potential before definition), The Magician at 1 (pure will), The World at 21 (completion of the journey). Tarot and numerology are the same system speaking two languages simultaneously.

Tarot and numerology share a common ancestor: the Western esoteric tradition that crystallized in Renaissance-era Italy and was formalized by the Hermetic and Kabbalistic movements of the 16th through 18th centuries. Both systems rest on the same foundation: the idea that numbers are not arbitrary counters but qualitative energies that shape experience. A card numbered 3 carries the 3's energy — creativity, expression, joy, the synthesis of two into something new — regardless of what image appears on it. The image on the card is the pictographic illustration of the number's energy. Once you understand the numbers, you understand the cards. And once you understand the cards, you see the numbers differently.

The Major Arcana — the 22 trump cards that describe the "big picture" forces in a reading — runs from 0 (The Fool) to 21 (The World). The sequence is not a hierarchy but a journey: the Fool's journey through life from unconscious beginning to conscious completion. Each stop on that journey corresponds to a specific numerological energy.

The 22 Major Arcana — Number by Number

0
The Fool
Pure potential before any path is chosen. Infinite possibility, zero limitation. The beginning that contains all endings.
1
The Magician
Will, intention, skill. The 1's energy: individual agency at its peak — "As above, so below." Tools laid out. Time to act.
2
The High Priestess
Intuition, mystery, the unconscious. The 2's receptivity — she does not act but holds the hidden wisdom between polarities.
3
The Empress
Creativity, fertility, abundance. The 3 in full flower: the Empress is the creative principle made flesh — nature, birth, growth.
4
The Emperor
Structure, authority, order. The 4's stability — the Emperor builds and enforces the systems that make civilization possible.
5
The Hierophant
Tradition, institutions, spiritual authority. The 5's tension: freedom vs. established structure. The bridge between worlds.
6
The Lovers
Choice, love, values alignment. The 6's harmony and responsibility — the defining choice between paths, not just romance.
7
The Chariot
Willpower, mastery, forward motion. The 7's focused determination — controlling opposing forces through inner discipline.
8
Strength
Courage, inner power, patience. The 8's mastery — not brute force but the quiet authority that tames the lion through presence.
9
The Hermit
Solitude, introspection, inner guidance. The 9's wisdom withdrawal — illuminating the path for others after completing your own.
10
The Wheel of Fortune
Cycles, fate, turning points. 10 = 1+0 = 1, the new cycle beginning. What goes up comes down; what was down rises.
11
Justice
Cause and effect, truth, accountability. Master 11 energy: the Illuminator exposing what is hidden so balance can be restored.
12
The Hanged Man
Suspension, sacrifice, new perspective. 12=1+2=3: creative insight gained through surrender. Deliberate pause mid-journey.
13
Death
Transformation, endings, necessary change. 13=1+3=4: the 4's restructuring at its most absolute. Not literal death — rebirth.
14
Temperance
Balance, moderation, patience. 14=1+4=5: the 5's adaptability expressed as alchemical blending — integration of opposites.
15
The Devil
Bondage, materialism, shadow self. 15=1+5=6: the 6's harmony corrupted — attachment mistaken for love, comfort mistaken for meaning.
16
The Tower
Sudden upheaval, revelation, breakthrough. 16=1+6=7: false structures (the 7's false certainties) destroyed in a flash of clarity.
17
The Star
Hope, healing, renewal. 17=1+7=8: the 8's power restored after the Tower — abundance flowing freely after the storm.
18
The Moon
Illusion, fear, the unconscious. 18=1+8=9: the 9's completion in shadow — what must be faced before the final dawn arrives.
19
The Sun
Joy, clarity, success. 19=1+9=10=1: a new dawn, the purest 1 energy — clarity, vitality, and radiant individual power returned.
20
Judgement
Awakening, reckoning, calling. 20=2+0=2: the 2's receptivity at its ultimate — hearing the call from beyond and answering it.
21
The World
Completion, integration, wholeness. 21=2+1=3: the journey ends in creative fullness. The Fool's journey complete. Begin again.
The Fool begins at 0 with everything and nothing. The World ends at 21 — which reduces to 3, the number of creative synthesis. The journey from potential to completion is also a journey from silence to expression.

Your Life Path and Your Arcana

Because both tarot and numerology use the same underlying number system, there is a direct correspondence between your Life Path number and your Major Arcana "birth card" — the card that describes your fundamental energetic signature and the primary lessons of your lifetime.

To find your birth card, simply look up your Life Path number in the Major Arcana above. A Life Path 1 corresponds to The Magician. Life Path 7 corresponds to The Chariot. Life Path 9 corresponds to The Hermit. Master numbers carry even more specific correspondences: Life Path 11 corresponds to Justice; Life Path 22 corresponds to The Fool (22 = 2+2 = 4, but also the count of cards in the Major Arcana — the 22 encompasses all of them) and The World (21+1=22).

Why 22 Major Arcana? The Numerological Answer

The Major Arcana contains exactly 22 cards — the same count as the letters in the Hebrew alphabet that forms the spine of Kabbalah, the mystical tradition deeply intertwined with both Tarot and Western numerology. Twenty-two is also the number of paths on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life connecting its ten Sephirot (emanations). And 22 is, of course, master number 22 — the Master Builder's number. The 22 Major Arcana are the Master Builder's complete blueprint for the architecture of human experience: 22 structural forces that underlie every situation, every choice, every transformation a person encounters in a lifetime. The choice of 22 was not accidental. It was a deliberate encoding of the numerological system into the structure of the deck itself.
