Da Vinci is famous for this: of his approximately 20 large paintings, only 15 are considered completed. Of his thousands of pages of notebooks, only a fraction were organized and published in his lifetime. Of his engineering designs, almost none were built during his life — they existed as detailed, executable plans that the 15th century lacked the industrial capacity to realize.
Da Vinci filled approximately 13,000 pages of notebooks with drawings, observations, calculations, and plans during his lifetime. He wrote in mirror script — right to left, backwards — which has been interpreted as a privacy measure, a left-hander's accommodation to prevent ink smearing, or simply the natural direction of a mind that worked in reflections and reversals. The notebooks were not organized or published during his lifetime; they were scattered, sold, and lost for centuries, with many pages still being discovered and authenticated today. The 22 Master Builder built the most comprehensive private intellectual archive of the Renaissance, and then left the building of its legacy to others. He built the contents. He trusted that the container would find its shape without him.
